U.S. Government Statistics of the Day

Three items from NOAA's October 2009 "State of the Climate" report:
  • The average October temperature of 50.8°F was 4.0°F below the 20th Century average and ranked as the 3rd coolest based on preliminary data.

  • For the nation as a whole, it was the third coolest October on record. The month was marked by an active weather pattern that reinforced unseasonably cold air behind a series of cold fronts. Temperatures were below normal in eight of the nation's nine climate regions, and of the nine, five were much below normal. Only the Southeast climate region had near normal temperatures for October.

  • For the year-to-date (January - October) period, the contiguous U.S. temperature ranked 43rd warmest.
Just don't tell the Associated Press's Seth Borestein.

Instapundit linked today to a study showing periods of rapid catastrophic climate change 12,000 and 8,000 years ago - neither, quite obviously, related to the burning of fossil fuels.

The world is dangerous and climate is dangerous. Ice caps are not inherently stable, and could slip off, regardless of the warming or cooling of the planet. Volcanoes erupt. Tsunamis and hurricanes happen.

People want to feel that they have some control over the uncontrollable, so they get caught up in things like global warming. We have been bad and wasteful, and the earth will get angry. We must sacrifice our goods to the earth gods so they won't punish us. Rather sad and pathetic, we are. Not very different from throwing virgins into volcanoes or putting the blood of a child in the mortar of a house foundation. It is rather evidence that when we abandon the God of our fathers, we simply go find new ones, more primitive and bloodthirsty. (Note: that is not a comment on the existence of God, but on man's nature.)

And of course, it is always good to have others to blame. That other tribe up the river has poisoned us... The mountain people have angered the gods with their wickedness... American greed is endangering us all. Stop them! Stop them!

It's a useless piece of sh**?

The Swartzberg Test:
The validity of a science is its ability to predict.

Global Warming "science" is anything but.

This seems of particular interest, too. It's a good summary of how much chicanery is going on in "proving" GW.

AVI: there's good data showing that global warming, if true, would save lives.

OBH: I saw that; great article. And two other excellent articles on recent temperature trends will be the subject of a future post.
