They Say It's Your Birthday

On the occasion of the Corps' 233rd birthday, former Marine recruiter Joe Carter distills one of America's most precious liberties:
We often hear that freedom can only be fully appreciated when it’s taken away. While that may be true, I believe that freedom can only be fully enjoyed when it's taken for granted. When we have to concentrate on each breath, we cannot truly enjoy our health. When we as citizens have to remain constantly vigilant, we cannot truly enjoy our liberty.

It's the first time I've paid attention to this. My fourth son has had his physical, his ASVAB, his MEPS, and will be going into the Corps any day now.

I am grateful to him for his soon-to-be service. BTW, the annual event at 8th & I Streets is one of this town's most-sought tickets.
