less likely to appeal to an American, or--I don't claim any great expertise here--more likely to appeal to a European.

Well, it is an American saying.
But it certainly, at this point, isn't an overt marketing idea (although there is plenty of actual conformity in US fashion).
Great minds think for themselves and don't accept the biblical and political brainwashing they receive from their elders.
