Appeasement doesn't work. My own moderation earned me no points in paradise. Representative democracy requires the tolerance to wait for the next election. Radical Islam couldn't even wait two weeks.
SC&A and Ilona were right: the clash has arrived. Only, it's not a clash of civilizations; it's a war against primitive nihilism. Which side are you on, boys?

Well, once is too many, but I take your point.
This is certainly not a fracas between opposing civilizations. I believe you have named it correctly.
And Howard is right - no self-respecting government can allow such people to control its policies. There can be no compromise at all with these people. To put it another way, if they wish to box us into a corner in which we are forced to make the choice of being the boot or being under the boot, I vote for being the boot.
However, I don't think the Muslim world as a whole is nihilistic - it is just that these people have succeeded in gaining a foothold and now cannot be easily shaken off. After all, they murder their opponents without remorse within their societies as well as outside of them.
