Another Bush Doctrine Convert?

Along with The Netherlands, Denmark's always been a tolerant country and proud of that tolerance. Yet, starting even before the slayings of Pim Fortyn and Theo Van Gogh provided "education by murder" in the Netherlands, Denmark woke to Islam and the threat exacerbated by unrestricted and family reunification immigration policies. Three years ago, the Danish implemented Europe's "toughest curbs on immigration, largely aimed at people from Muslim countries." Still, according to the Telegraph (UK), the danger's serious enough to worry Denmark's royalty:
Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has called on the country "to show our opposition to Islam", regardless of the opprobium such a stance provokes abroad. . .

She said: "We are being challenged by Islam these years - globally as well as locally. It is a challenge we have to take seriously. We have let this issue float about for too long because we are tolerant and lazy.

"We have to show our opposition to Islam and we have to, at times, run the risk of having unflattering labels placed on us because there are some things for which we should display no tolerance."

"And when we are tolerant, we must know whether it is because of convenience or conviction."
Muslims alone aren't the problem. As Bruce Bawer described in his path-breaking (and wave making) Partisan Review piece "Tolerating Intolerance," the danger stems from those uninterested in assimilation (often indolent); radicalized, they try importing Shari`ah law into their new nation. According to Bower "If the only permitted way of talking about the topic is to reiterate insipid clichés in support of "the multicultural society," Europe is doomed."

In addition to angering Islam, Denmark has become the bad boy of Europe for its danske tilstander: "Danish conditions." More and more, there is a de facto segregation between native and Muslim communities as well as routine and open expression of mutual hostility and distrust. I'm not praising such a situation. But the rest of Europe's arguably worse:
By allowing a vast and so far utterly unsupervised subculture of intrinsically hostile non-Western immigrants to emerge within their societies, the developed nations have permitted the emergence of an alternative social and political structure in their midst in which terrorists can operate virtually undetected. By seeking to appease it by granting it special privileges, the host countries only prompt laughter at our stupidity and demands for more.
Oriana Fallaci warns (English translation to be published in August), "Europe becomes more and more a province of Islam, a colony of Islam." White Pebble says they're "getting it in Denmark." They surely are. It will take some time to know whether the cure's worse than the disease.

Well um first of all "danske tilstander" actuelly means nothing.... There is no word as "tilstander" and if there where it would sound more like bystander (til=by stander=stander) than conditions and I actuelly don't know wich of the words it is your looking for(As danes is pretty much bystanders:-) But I think that you as many others have misunderstod what the Queen means:-P A lot of it goes away in translation because non-nativs can't learn the language... So I will translat it for you pretty much sentence by sentence and not word by word:

"We are being challenged by Islam these years - globally as well as locally."

challenged here is not only by them, but also ourself. It is a good challenge one to make you stronger (You can hear i on the way she saies the word). It is commonly used when there is an isue we can't ignore.

"It is a challenge we have to take seriously."

She means "We have ignored it"

"We have let this issue float about for too long because we are tolerant and lazy."

Well this is a good translation :-)

"We have to show our opposition to Islam and we have to, at times, run the risk of having unflattering labels placed on us"

Well opposition is a very strong word and and who the hell learned this man/women danish. He is translating it word for word and not in context... Makes me angry. It says "You shall step in character and not flee or ignore confrontations even if it at first may seem unwise" being a very quite people we often ignore problems and thereby stop any chance of integration:-(

"because there are some things for which we should display no tolerance."

And that we shall not tolerate is our discramination of foreigners of course

"And when we are tolerant, we must know whether it is because of convenience or conviction."

Well it may not sound like it but this is an attack on the native danes for not being good enough to integrate muslims(You have to remember the context of the text... The next 3 sections are mostly about how bad we(Native dnaes) are at integrating people being to smart and unfriendly)

So essentiel it is a speak to the danes to bee bether at integrating people and not an attack on muslims. As a mather of fact the speach was praised by the muslims communities in Denmark(If you speak danish it would be at http://www.m-i-d.dk/site/mediavis.asp?id=34)

And well the reason we have the "toughest curbs on immigration, largely aimed at people from Muslim countries." is also that we are bad at imigrations... Did you know that last year 83% of all crimes in denmark is made by immigrants, eventhough they represent only 7% of the population? (And funny enough their crime rate is under the average american) The reason of this, we think is bad integration. That is why we slammed the doors closed until the first portion is bether integrated. We where just not good enough so the queen gave os a bollocking at new year and then this one you are talking about and well we a did a lot to integrate them and we are getting got results(Half year there where 35% less crime repport than last half year and it is falling))

(Well I know this is a late comment, but you where so of trail that I had to explain it)
