Remember the infamous "hockey stick" chart purporting to prove recent, and alarming, global warming? That argument was undercut by current temperature data, and utterly demolished by the methodological errors behind the calculations--particularly picking-and-choosing un-representative, imperfect and anomalous tree ring growth data. In other words, possible scientific fraud. The IPCC once heavily relied on hockey stick predictions, but more recently backed off.
Climate Audit's Steve McIntyre has led the long effort to reverse-engineer and correct the hockey stick claim. And he recently produced a corrected, more accurate version of the historical tree ring data as compared to the original:
source: Climate Audit
The "red" curve represents the data used to produce the hockey stick prediction; the black line represents the corrected figures. As Anthony Watts says, "Viva la difference!"
The hockey stick is dead. Hardly a basis for impoverishing the world.
