Bowing to the electoral preference for youth and change, Democrat Senator Robert Byrd "allowed his wings to be clipped" according to the New York Daily News:

The 90-year-old longest-serving senator in U.S. history revealed Friday he will step down next year as chairman of the powerful appropriations committee. He is in fragile health.

The punchline? Byrd will be replaced by Senator Daniel Inouye of Hawaii--who is 84.
