Clarity About State Compulsion

Norman Geras of normblog sees it straight:

Peter Singer is commending the benefits of compulsory voting, as in Australia. He tells us that 'Australians want to be coerced into voting'. Whether or not one is persuaded that the benefits are worth the cost of compulsion, this is an elision on his part. For, as he also says, the law compelling voting 'is supported by about 70% of the population'. That means that up to 30% of Australians may not want to be coerced.

What's unusual is the number of lefties unashamed to admit that government compulsion is central to their platform. Kudos to Norm for exposing the elephant in the room.
