Heaven and Hell are exactly like Earth, except you get assigned your job function based on your nationality.
In Heaven, the French are the chefs, the Germans are the engineers, and the policemen are English.
In Hell, it works differently: The French are the engineers, the Brits are the chefs, and the policemen are the Germans.
(I've heard George Carlin, whom I don't think originated the joke, do a much, much longer version that lists off about 10 nationalities, but the short one above gets both the joke's point and humor off adequately.)
