QOTW

An Op-Ed in the latest (subscription-only) National Review:
The mainstream media embraced Mrs. Sheehan because they want a story in August, and they want a liberal story anytime. . . Better they cover shark attacks and murders in Aruba; the only damage that does is to our wits.

Mainstream Democrats have a sickly relation to Mrs. Sheehan, even as they do to the hard antiwar Left. They toy with her — Elizabeth Edwards, wife of John, supports “Cindy Sheehan’s right to be heard”; to their credit, most of them do not talk the talk spontaneously; but since they seem to have nothing else to say, they let it pass. This is not just an effect of the Iraq war. On the eve of the 2002 elections, liberal senator Paul Wellstone, his wife, his daughter, and three aides were killed in a plane crash. Activists turned the funeral into a hysterical tent meeting cum political rally. The mind of a major party is a terrible thing to waste.
