The terrorists had gotten used to the kind of response the Israelis could mount, which they could handle.

But when you take down two national governments that are supporting terrorists, it seems that even terrorists become concerned that they might be stopped.

When you take out the head of the terrorist organization militarily a couple years after his greatest success, they notice -- Note that I remain certain that Osama Bin Laden died in a tunnel collapse ca. 2003, 2004... and that no one acked it on either side because it wasn't certain who would be able to make the most hay of it: The terrorists, by turning him into a martyr, or the USA, by killing The Golden Boy of terrorism and demoralizing its supporters. Both sides made more hay by leaving it open (The Obama took the credit for it after he had become a historical footnote) I assert the evidence of this is the massive change in the kind of rhetoric echoing forth from "him" before and after this point. Prior to this it was "Molon Labe", after this (rumored to have occurred ca. 2003/4) it was "Can't we all get along?". The speeches after that point seemed to have been written by Michael Moore, not by an implacable enemy. Further, the speed with which they dispatched "the body" when he was officially killed, making it certain that no one outside the government action had any chance to examine and challenge the identification. I anticipate some interesting admissions in 30-odd years, after the stuff becomes subject to FOIA type requests... assuming the government lasts that long, which does seem doubtful at the moment.

And the drone strikes since then have also helped, by wiping out many of the potential successors. I think it would be interesting to examine how many actual co-collaborators died in those strikes, vs. innocent civilians. I'm sure the merdia has numbers. I trust them as much as numbers from The Lancet. The latter is unfortunate, as it makes for potential recruits. But the only way to stop terrorism is to cut off the head of the snake anytime you can.OBloodyHellnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6427940.post-51816006838978836542021-10-15T10:57:35.514-04:002021-10-15T10:57:35.514-04:00Come back, Carl, come back!?!?!?

The result is blogging is not part of the mass media. Sigh, which is perhaps one reason why Whittle made the leap to video, because video bloggers do get to be part of the media, witness megastars Diamond and Silk.
Bob Cosmoshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13420771432114368417noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6427940.post-90171522661499335092016-12-06T00:02:36.534-05:002016-12-06T00:02:36.534-05:00... It just makes sense. Then the Rich will invest in our country instead of in countries where the tax rate is lower. Off Shore accounts ring a bell. Also, the social security program needs to go back to the private fund. It was moved to the general fund under LBJ and now we have a problem. This is why SOCIALISM DOES NOT WORK. It worked well for me onstage—I saw a National Theatre production that came to New York. But if you read some of it and didn't care for it, I doubt a second go-round would fare any better.John Branchhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12323569021826786444noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6427940.post-34115638700592923842016-07-09T17:09:34.135-04:002016-07-09T17:09:34.135-04:00I loved Chess, obviously. But I was lucky enough ...I loved Chess, obviously. But I was lucky enough to see it a month after it opened in London, with original cast. Was the most expensive play ever staged (to that time). I was mesmerized--both as a cold-war junkie and an ex-chess player. By the time it made it to America, the Cold War was ending, so the completely re-wrote it (dumbing it down, etc.). Awful. And there's third version that swept around small theaters in the States about three years ago. That one's even worse; I'll just say this: it has a happy ending that made me want to vomit.

You ask about the recordings. The ORIGINAL recording, the one with Murray Head singing "One Night in Bangkok", was recorded before the play opened in London. I doubt anyone realized they'd recorded an international smash hit, but the revenue from the one song funded the risky show. Yet that album was NOT what I heard in London; they'd added and re-arranged songs (and shifted scenes from Act 1 to Act 2). Used to annoy the heck out of me--for example, "Embassy Lament" is not on that on that album, although it's the best comic relief in the play.

The American cast album accurately reflected the American version--I trashed it years ago.

Not until the 2008 live concert you mention was the original London performance restored: all the songs, and in the right order. The problem is that although no one can doubt that the "Bobby Fischer" character on the 2008 album has a better voice, I'm used to Murray Head warning me of the dangers of Thailand. And two of the other three vocalists are manifestly inferior to the London version. Plus there's a half-dozen spots where the brass or woodwinds make obvious flubs (ok, it was a live performance). But, damn it, there's many a time I want to re-live that experience (1985 I think; ah, youth), and just play the 2008 album straight through.

Re "Democracy", to be honest, I tried to read the script and quit. Should I try again?

Btw, I almost never look at this Blog's comments anymore; stick to Goodreads.

NOfPAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
